Mason, Bonk qualify for U.S. Open sectional

Former University of Hawaii at Hilo golfer Nick Mason qualified for a U.S. Open sectional Saturday, while former Hawaii Preparatory Academy standout Max Bonk earned an alternate spot on a separate Hawaii course.

Coming off a victory at the Mid-Pacific Open in April, Mason fired a 69 to take the top spot at Hoakalei Country Club in Ewa Beach, Oahu. Jason Jakovac (71) earned the alternate slot. Honokaa graduate Sean Maekawa (74) tied for fifth in the 17-player field.

At King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku, Maui, Bonk won a three-hole playoff against David Goode after each carded 71s. Samuel Cyr advanced with a 70.

There are 12 sectionals on tap June 2 to gain entry to the Open, June 12 to 15 in Village of Pinehurst, N.C.
